Busy Summer - Creating Art

During July I was taking graduate studio work, and creating for the classes at AC Moore. I designed a class (July and August) for kids based off the idea of drawing and ZentangesR  . . . the ATC Tangle-doodles class. The images were interesting enough that some adults expressed they wanted to learn. I also have classes available for bookmaking still, through the end of August. Along with a new class that will meet weekly on Thursdays; Visual Journaling that is along the idea of Gina Rossi Armfield’s book No Excuses Art Journaling.  It is a great resource of inspiring yourself and creativity.

July flew by doing graduate studio work. I worked on my artwork, taking photos and editing the pictures. Drawing and sketching.  Researching. . . lighting for photographing landscapes and macro images in the forest, along with contemporary photo artists.  I also researched fantasy artists, wings and watercolor illustrators because I was illustrating ideal fairies for a book wish to illustrate.

Now it is August and I am still busy as ever.   I thought summer might be relaxing making art . . . no way. The kids are getting ready for back to school. I am creating many, many, many new lessons for the classes I will be teaching at Hampstead Middle school, to grades 5 through 8.  AND I will still be teaching the few classes at AC Moore.

102nd B-day Party

Today was an interesting day, We held a party for my grandmother who turned 102 today, over 115 family members gathered and reminded her of the wonderful memories she gave us.

Today my grandmother turned 102 years old, shes still in good health and she was my main inspiration for starting to create art. She taught me to oil paint at age 8, I painted from flowers and trees to everything else with her. We created on canvas, on slate, on sones, on large shells, on paper then we began other adventures. She taught me about drawing figures and the scale of them when I was 10, illustrating and creating characters while sitting under the weeping willow in the yard. She is my inspiration to continue my passion to create, until 2 years ago she was still painting and drawing. She always asks what I am making and drawing when I see her even though she may ask me again in an hour we have a great conversation of art.

Always keep in contact with the ones who inspire you and the family you care about, and if your lucky like I was your art inspiration comes from family.

Graduate Class Artwork

This month I have been doing a lot of drawing and creating for my classes.  I found it interesting to make art in a different medium than the mixed media collages I have been doing.  I have been doing research that I am interested in on some artists and themes.  From my researched ideas, I have been evaluating my own work, questioning my-self about what my art has to say and what motivates me to create.  Because I am taking two different graduate classes, I have two separate art statements, and I have been trying to refine them both.  Below is some of the work that I have created this month.

This image is inspired by a classmate’s artwork.

Some of the sketches from the beginning of the month are dark, at the start of the month my art desk needed a light fixed, once the broken light was fixed the photos came out better.

I have also found that I really want to get back into creating block prints, so I will be using some of my sketches to create the stamps for block printing.

Creating just to create - FUN.

Jill Vickers Copyright 2014

During the month of April I have been busy.  I have worked in my mixed-media journal, worked on an art magazine challenge piece and started back with my classes at New Hampshire Institute of Art.

In my art journaling, I created a new piece of mixed-media work.

Jill Vickers Copyright 2014I received a fancy napkin from my Mom, it has the birds on It - shown on the right hand side, which I used as part of the background.  I also used  some text papers and lined paper for the background.   I had an outline of the bird and a wooden flower and leaf that I painted, placed them together and ended with this look.  I like the way it turned out.

Also during this month, I finished creating the piece for the art Dia de los Meurtos  inspired challenge that is with the magazine Cloth Paper Scissors, which I will submit into their contest to be published.   It is part of their Calaveras challenge entry, mixed-media skull; hopefully, it will be chosen for the challenge.  I enjoyed doing a little research to find out more about Dia de los Meurtos celebration, which is the celebration for the Day of the Dead.

March Days . . . Gelato Days!

March pages started with vintage tissue paper and my new Faber Castell Gelatos.  I was having so much fun playing I did not take any photos as I was working and I actually did two sets of page layouts this past week, well since the 1st of the month.  Using the Design Memory Craft Gelatos® by Faber-Castell and experimenting with what can be done with then was so enjoyable, I lost track of time both sittings, forgetting to take in progress photos, L sorry viewers.  I also used,  Crafter's Workshop Stencils  - Mini Birds of a Feather and Cherry Blossom, Basic Grey scrapbook papers, stamps, Maya Road - chipboard birds, Prima Marketing  - Life Time brads and wood flower embellishments, Liquitex® modeling paste, my Pitt pens,  Golden® mat medium, a new stamp I just got from Unity® and  my trusty Scotch Quick-Dry Adhesive.  Such a fun week of playing in my art journal, new materials to play with . . . lucky me.

And I still found time to sketch in my travel art journal.  "Keep Thinking Spring"

Make Time for ART

Be creative each day and create art.

There are days that are so crazy we tend to forget what we do for our-self or for enhancing our creativity. During the month of February, I sat and created art whenever and wherever, I had a few minutes. Some of the art was mixed media and some was just small drawings as I waited for an appointment.

I began a new art journal this month, started the pages with “Making time to create ART” image.

Playing with new supplies, you can get interesting results.  I created  houses and just kept adding paint, washi tape, ink, turquoise paint, lime green paint, enamel accents, rub-on words, cardstock shapes and drawing.

AND the start of new pages for March with vintage tissue paper and my new Faber Castell Gelatos.

Inspired Create Art!

Inspiring Artists

I have watched other artists on YouTube videos while they create their art, and it is always interesting to see how other artists work. I was inspired by Andrea Gomoll’s February challenge of creating faces this month, as I worked in my sketchbook.  I also watched how Donna Downey and Christy Tomlinson create and was inspired with the flowers and drip-age in the mixed media work.

I know I have my own style but watching other artists’ work can give ideas on how to use new media, or what I can be done with the holes in an old slotted spatula.

Inspired by the holiday of Love

Inspired by the holiday of Love.

Valentine's Day is almost here, just a few days away.

How will you decorate for the celebration?  I hang hearts around my home.
This year I created a mixed-media heart plaque.

I began with a wood heart plaque, and painted the base with gesso.  I then added tissue and papers to the top banner area for texture.  I chose various papers to go along with my theme, stamps and some lettering.
Below is a photo of items I pulled out to possibility use in the plaque.

I glued down the small cut/torn pieces of paper and collage them together over the heart shape.  I also added gesso to blend and tone down the color.
Sorry for the photo reflections - I work on a glass tabletop that makes cleanup easy.

Next added in some stamping in red and black ink - I used stamps from Stamping Up! and Tim Holtz along with a Mini-Letter set I have had many years.

This photo shows an idea I had for stamp placement . . . that I changed as I continued working.
When I finished stamping and gluing items for the background, I used walnut ink to stain the edges.  Once it was all dry, I sprayed it with a clear coat of acrylic.
I then used my Staz On black inkpad and stamped the saying, the flower / hearts and the bee on separate papers. I used my colored pencils to color in the images, placed them on with foam tape for a raised effect.  Used a fabric flower with a heart center and done.

Great decoration to celebrate the day with your Valentine!

A New Year to Begin a Creative Journey

I was looking back through my sketchbook and found the sketch pictured below and decided, “just do it.”  I sketched this image in January of 2013; it is about creativity and the New Year.  I used this as inspiration along with some inspiration from Donna Downey, a mixed-media artist on YouTube.

Pictured is the sketch from January that has a flower with words combined.

Below is pictured of most of the supplies that I used; pattern tissue paper , acrylic paint, matte medium, paint markers, ink pens, Staz-On stamp-pad in black, word stamps, vintage page text, bakers twine, the sticker from the Smash washi tape, mental accent embellishments and water soluble crayons.

This is the finished picture in my art Journal, which also happens to be the last page spread in my journal for 2013. As this image ends the year 2013, I think this is the start of something new not only for my blog, but also for my art journal. For 2014, I want to challenge myself, and anyone who would like to join me, to create mixed-media artwork each month.

I really like the color palette that I used, permanent dark red, scarlet, madder carmine, pine green, yellow green, and Prussian blue, along with black and white.

What do you think?  Please leave a comment.
